5 Local Non-Profits To Support This Holiday Season

What do the holidays mean to you? To me, this time of year is all about taking a step back to acknowledge everything I’m thankful for. Every chance I get, I give back by donating my time or money to organizations that support metro Detroiters who need it most.

My family and I aren’t big turkey people, but we’d love to give a family in need a turkey or meal they deserve this Thanksgiving/holiday season. There’s nothing more fulfilling than helping make someone’s spirits a little brighter, so if you or someone you know is in need this holiday season then send me an e-mail and I will try to support you any way I can!

If you’re looking for other ways to help others, then check out my list of non-profits below. I promise, you’ll never regret supporting people or organizations who need it most.

  1. Gleaner’s Food Bank: If you donate soon, your donation will be matched in their current fundraiser. You can also volunteer your time here! Gleaners provides food to more than 660 partner soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other agencies across the region, and supplements efforts of those partners by offering direct service drive-up grocery and food box distributions. In its fiscal year 2020, Gleaners distributed nearly 64 million pounds of food to neighbors in need. Every dollar donated provides three meals and 94 cents of every donated dollar goes to food and food programs.

  2. Capuchin Soup Kitchen: Donate money or choose from several volunteer opportunities…this organization has everything from soup kitchens to meal, job and children’s programs. Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing food, clothing, and human development programs to the people of our community.

  3. Forgotten Harvest: Every $10 you donate helps provide enough fresh food for 40 meals or $70 worth of groceries! You can also donate your time to this organization that delivers 144,000 pounds of surplus food per day to local charities five days a week, providing families in need with fresh and nutritious food free of charge.

  4. Variety, The Children’s Charity: Since 1932, Variety - the Children's Charity Detroit has been simply helping kids - no matter the need - by providing vital support and essential services to more than 20,000 children with unique and special needs in our community.

  5. Barn Sanctuary: Donate, volunteer or visit Barn Sanctuary! This organization was established in 2016 in Chelsea, Michigan with a mission to change the way the world views farmed animals by rescuing, rehabilitating abused and neglected farmed animals in need. Farmed animals are the most abused and neglected group of animals in the world and Barn Sanctuary is home to over 100 rescued farmed animals including: cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and goats.

I hope this list inspires you to break out of your comfort zone and help a few local non-profits who are doing important work each and every day. -Kellie
